The Ronald E. McNair Program at IUPUI

The Ronald E. McNair Program is a federally funded effort to increase the numbers of low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented students who pursue the Ph.D. and seek careers in research and teaching in higher education. The IUPUI program is open to all disciplines that offer the Ph.D. as the terminal degree.

This prestigious program is aimed at talented students who are motivated to excel in academics, who love research, and who are eager to work closely with faculty mentors on independent research projects to prepare for doctoral studies. Participants become members of the national McNair community of scholars and have access to a wide variety of exciting academic and social experiences that develop them both as scholars and as citizens.

For Juniors and Seniors: The IUPUI McNair Scholars Program was established in 2003. Juniors and Seniors whose goals match the aims of the program as outlined above are encouraged to apply. The program begins during the summer starting the first Monday in June. In the summer program McNair Scholars explore research interests, identify faculty research mentors, and begin to learn about the doctoral career path. Summer participants continue research throughout the academic year. The IUPUI program provides academic counseling, mentoring, travel opportunities, career counseling, and social events for participants. The summer program provides a stipend of $3,000. A limited number of full tuition and fee scholarships during the academic year are available to qualified McNair Scholars.

For Freshmen and Sophomores: Students just entering IUPUI or completing their freshman year at IUPUI are encouraged to apply to the Undergraduate Research Scholars Preparatory Program for McNair Scholars (URSP/M) to become Undergraduate Research Scholars. This program parallels the McNair Scholars Program and prepares students to enter the McNair Scholars Program in the summer following completion of their sophomore year (upon attaining junior status), assuming all qualifications for the McNair Scholars Program are met at that time. The Undergraduate Research Scholars Program is managed by the staff in the Center for Research and Learning and the IUPUI Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program. However, since Undergraduate Research Scholars accepted into this special preparatory program receive preference to become McNair Scholars and must meet all the criteria for the McNair Scholars Program applicants must fill out all the forms for the McNair Scholars Program and proceed through the same selection process as students who qualify for the McNair Scholars Program.
